CUPPING

Cupping Therapy to Let Go of Stress and Chronic Pain

Tired of living with chronic muscle pain? Cupping is a powerful modality used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to relieve muscle tension, and encourage your body to let go of stress. Often used alongside acupuncture, it is an effective pain management option.

“I visited Aleksandra for a number of muscle and joint pains. The treatments involved both needles and cupping. After 3 sessions I felt a significant improvement in all areas and was quite surprised to be free from pain and mobility issues I have had in my back for years. I found Aleksandra’s attentive caring touch and the environment of her studio to be deeply soothing.” – Ki

What is cupping?

Cupping is where stationary glass cups are heated and applied to the skin to pull muscle tissue inside and promote blood circulation. Other times, a practitioner may glide the cup over oiled body parts to produce a steady tension as it’s moving.

What Does Cupping Treat?

It is commonly used to treat muscle tension. Stress can be stored in the body as muscle tension when you spend long periods of time holding muscles tightly. Long-term holding in the muscles can go unnoticed. Hunching over and poor posture can also contribute to chronic pain. Cupping decreases inflammation and increases circulation to help bring relief to achy and tired muscles. It is best combined with acupuncture, but also available on its own.

This form of therapy is also used for:

  • Lung and breathing conditions; bronchitis, asthma, congestion, common colds
  • Joint pain, tight muscles, back pain
  • Digestive disorders, menstrual discomfort

More Information About Cupping

Is Cupping Painful?
Everyone’s experience is different. You will feel a pulling sensation, which some may find uncomfortable in problem areas, however the benefits tend to outweigh any mild discomfort. As a trained TCM practitioner, I take great care in being sensitive to any discomfort you may experience, and endeavour to make your treatment as gentle and soothing as possible.

Why Do Cups Cause Bruising?
The pressure from the cups causes the tiny blood vessels at the surface of the body to break, forcing new blood into the area. This allows the surrounding tissue to have a better exchange of oxygen, wastes and nutrients.

What Are The Side Effects?
The treatment can leave temporary dark red or purple marks (bruises) that disappear within a few days to a couple of weeks. Bruising can happen if the cups are on long enough with enough pressure. Some people bruise faster than others. In some areas of the body, like the face, cups are used for a very short period of time so as not to leave any marks.
